Where is shipwreck beach in zante

And while he and his crew ostensibly tried to salvage the cargo, part of it was carried away by the waves, bringing bounty to villagers who then hid the goods. When the authorities got wind of the incident, they came and arrested the captain and his crew, deported the Italians back to their country and convicted the parties for smuggling, while the cargo was sold through an auction.

Recently, the captain of the ship, Kefalonia-born Captain Charalambos Kompothekras—Kotsoros, released the true account of what happened that night. When the shipment was ready and set sail for return, during the evening hours of October 2, , the ship ended at the beach of St George near Volimes due to bad weather conditions and mechanical failure.

I reported the accident to the authorities, but due to the fact that the beach was not accessible on foot by land, we were not able to protect the ship from thieves and other dangers.

As a result, part of the shipment was stolen along with various vessel equipment radar, VHF radio, etc. I went back to the authorities to report that my property was stolen and the General Prosecutor of the area in my presence organized a formal on-site investigation with the local police.

The outcome was outstanding as during the first days of the operation, all stolen items, as well as the stolen part of the shipment, were found in local villages nearby, and 29 persons in total were persecuted and jailed during the following months after the trials were completed. After being cleared from all accusations by the court, he was later forced by the authorities to remove the vessel by his own means. When he visited the site to see how he could execute the manoeuvre, he was so astonished by the beauty of the rusting carcass that he decided to leave it as is.

Whatever rumor or story you believe, there is no doubt that whatever happened that night of October 2nd in has left a stunning half-manmade, half-natural monument that has put Zakynthos on the worldwide tourist map. Sign Up. An option is to come in the afternoon, hoping that the organized cruise boats are already gone. Early morning visit is not recommended - the beach would be empty but in shade and without the sunlight Navagio is not what it is. The best time to see the Shipwreck beach is May, early June or middle September, considered that the sea is warm but there are less tourists on the island in general. The beach can be accessed only by boat and plenty of boat trip offers are available.

There is no way to climb up the cliffs or go down them and before you start wondering - the distant photos of Navagio you have seen from above were shot from an observation platform above the beach. Other photos are taken from the jump off point just above the beach - it is used for parachute and rope jumping, as the parachute allows people to "fly" for seconds before it opens and they land on the beach. Despite the tragic incident which happened there in and resulted in the death of a parachute jumper, Navagio is still among the most preferred spots for this extreme sport.

Some of them are full-day cruises which tour around the island and the Shipwreck beach is part of their program. Such trips are available from Zakynthos town. They are good if you want to see the entire island cove and the Blue Caves but if Navagio is your purpose, these trips may disappoint you because: 1 You will have just minutes on the beach for taking photos and selfies, and 2 Probably there will be more cruise boats with more people, as they tend to come at the same time, plus the private boats, boat taxis and parachute jumpers.

The boats are smaller, the trip takes less and allows you to spend more time on Navagio. Shared and individual boat trips are available also from Porto Vromi - it is a small harbor on the west coast and the closest to Navagio place from which you can hire a boat. The third option is to hire a shared speedboat for persons or to hire a boat entirely for yourself.

If you choose this kind of transportation to Navagio, be aware that there is no pier at the beach. The cruise boats have planks on which you can walk and land on the beach without touching the water. The speedboat will leave you as closest as possible to the beach but in the final part you need to jump off in the knee-deep water and walk a few meters to the shore.

It is neither difficult nor it requires swimming and yet it is good to know in case you are not prepared to get wet. As you can see from pictures, Shipwreck Beach is enclosed within large steep cliffs which give it this remote, inaccessible feel. Because of that, it is impossible to walk to the beach, instead you will need to take the boat. Frequent boat service to Shipwreck Cove is provided from nearby Porto Vromi located to the south, or from the Harbor of Saint Nikolas in Volimes, located to the north of Shipwreck Cove.

However when we visited Shipwreck we went on the boat trip run by the Potamitis Brothers which you can catch near the Lighthouse at Skinari. Shipwreck Cove is one of the most popular sights in Greece. Many travel guides agree that Shipwreck is the most photographed place in Greece , getting even more attention than the Acropolis of Athens or the Parthenon.

Because of that, if you choose the peak of the day during high season, chances are good you will have to share this rather cozy cove with thousands of other visitors.

In order to avoid overcrowding, go to Navagio Beach either early in the morning or put off your visit until later in the afternoon at around 3pm.
