Why holi is not celebrated in south india

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated grandly too. I was quite impressed about Karnataka being so cool but it was big surprise about the infamous water issue with Tamil Nadu. I always wondered when water comes from Lord Shiva's head I am surprised that each state feels they own it!! In today's social mileau when we celebrate festivals together the bonding improves Still we have a long way to go in Tamil Nadu The Hindu Munnani is trying hard for the Vinayaka Chaturthi but not met with great success.

The festivals are basically to help men to be aware of god. I am afraid these days men are compelled to remember god every split second because of multitudes of problems created by ourselves which do not seem to have human solutions.

So what is left is pomp and gaiety. Lot of the coloring, spraying happens even if you dont want to participate. I have lived in the north for 40 years hence i know, and i feel no joy on holi. Last edited: Mar 11, Delhites had packed up their woolens. The bone chilling cold had given way to warmer days.

Even at those high temperatures it used to be a standard protocol to wrap a muffler around the head while heading out in the morning. But having already faced the much harsher first winter in Delhi, these milder days seemed to bring in a relief to the stricken couple. She had just stepped out to buy some groceries, knowing well that with a day left for holi, she would be lucky not to be ambushed by water balloons or a splash of color, from any of the endless rows of balconies and terraces which she had to cross on the way to the market.

As the children in the balconies, resembling snipers, waited to take as many victims as possible, each successful hit would be greeted by a big cheer from the balconies around, as the unsuspecting victim stood around sheepishly, some grinning in disbelief and some gesticulating wildly at the mocking children in the balconies.

She looked around for her tormentor, but found tens of children perked in ledges around the buildings, it would be futile trying to guess as to who had fired the deadly missile at her. As the chill made her uncomfortable she wrapped her saree more tightly around her shoulders and proceeded to finish her errand. As she started her return trip, she found a large group of revelers coming her way, all of them adorned with bright colors and dancing merrily and spreading color all around. She froze in her tracks, looking for a doorway of escape, and thankfully found a grocery store a few steps ahead and quickly ducked in, to let the group pass.

The grocer looked curiously at her, as she beat a hasty retreat back into the street. The holi eve brought in more revelry, a huge bon-fire was lit few doorways down the street. The street folk gathered around the fire merrily dancing. As the couple looked on in curiosity, there was a call from down below asking them to join the group.

They looked at each other, Pattabi smiled his usual smiled and jumped up to go, egging her to join him, and she reluctantly accompanied him down the stairs. To her surprise the ladies joined in the dance too, a big taboo down south. One of the young ladies grabbed her hand and pulled her into the dancing crowd. Too dazed to react she tried doing a few dance steps. She would look awkward indeed trying out those moves out here in this group.

Kuchalambal not adequately forewarned, had her bath early in the morning as practice would have it and got ready for her prayers. The children had begun their fun in the streets and were heard shouting with joy, throwing colors and water at each other.

The couple watched stealthily from the floor above, at the rapidly increasing fervor on the streets. The joy of playing with colours with the loved ones, and feasting on delicious festive food fills the heart with excitement. But believe it or not, there are a few places in India that do not celebrate Holi. Read ahead to know why. In Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, a few villages like Kwili and Kurjhan have not been celebrating Holi for about years or so.

It is a local belief that the presiding goddess of the region, Tripura Sundari, does not like noise and hullabaloo. Hence, the locals refrain from noisy Holi celebrations. Rudraprayag is the converging point of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Tourists on a trip to Rudraprayag visit Koteshwar Mahadev, a famous and significant Shiva temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva had hidden himself inside this cave-temple when the demon Bhasmasura was chasing him. One of the most powerful shrines of Rudraprayag is Dhari Devi Temple, which is dedicated to goddess Kali.

Another destination that wears a deserted look on Holi is Ramsan village in Banaskantha district of Gujarat. It has been more than years that this village saw Holi celebrations. But Shiva was in deep meditation after the death of his wife Sati. The story prevalent in South India is that of Kamadeva-the Love God the Hindu equivalent of Cupid , who moves through the woods in the season of Spring, aiming his passion tipped arrows that pierce the heart at all who cross his path, from his bow made of sweet sugarcane strung with humming bees.

Meanwhile, the daughter of the mountains, Parvati, started meditating to acquire Lord Shiva as the husband. Since Lord Shiva was least interested in the world, all the God became concerned and afraid. They approached Kaama and asked him to shoot his arrow on Lord Shiva so that he gets back to his original self and marry Parvati.

So, Kaama went and shot his arrow but Lord Shiva was angered and opened his third eye and burnt Kaama to ashes. Shiva then looked towards Parvati and fructified her penance by marrying her. Shiva relents and partly restores Kamadeva to Rati. Thus, Holi is also considered as a festival that celebrates love.
