Why is ej in the hospital on days of our lives

EJ leaves a message for Nicole. He invites her over for dinner at the mansion. Kristen enters. She slaps him. Kristen blames EJ for Steve tracing her location based on the number she gave him. He then realizes someone else was at that dinner, but lies that it was a business associate. EJ offers the secret room in the wine cellar. EJ is aghast. EJ sighs. As Chloe leaves the Salem Inn, she spots Nicole sitting at a table.

Nicole tells her about Abe and then learns Chloe moved out of the Kiriakis mansion. Nicole gets a call from EJ, but she ignores it.

She calls the hospital and learns Abe is in stable condition. Chloe is relieved, but wants to know whose call she ignored. Nicole tells her it was EJ, who invited her to dinner. After agreeing Kristen should get what she deserves, Nicole admits EJ has been a good distraction from Rafe.

Chloe thinks Rafe deserves to know how Nicole feels about him. She recalls how in love she was with EJ once. Maybe she can feel that way again. Chloe worries about what will happen if EJ finds out what she did.

In a hospital exam room, Xander throws Gwen being Dr. The doctor retorts he and Gwen have a mutually beneficial arrangement. She runs errands for him while he keeps the secret about her miscarriage. Snyder remains mum when Xander questions what he means by that. Xander grabs the doctor, ordering him to leave Gwen alone.

He rips off his paper gown, picks up his shirt, and walks out. Kayla questions Gwen at the Horton house about Dr. She explains someone witnessed a disturbing exchange between them. Gwen assumes it was Xander but then realizes it was Tripp. Gwen thanks Kayla for her concern but lies that she was just upset talking about her miscarriage. They have tense words about Abigail before Kayla leaves.

Gwen gets a call from Dr. Snyder who demands she tell her friend to stop threatening him. Gwen hangs up when Xander walks into the room. He tells her he did her a favor but she counters her blackmailer is now furious with her. Xander brings up her miscarriage.

Gwen orders him not to mention that up ever again. Xander has an idea of the pain she feels and thinks Snyder is making it worse. He tells her to let him know if she decides she wants help with him. She writes that she slept with Xander. Nicole cries as she hovers over the send button. Abe shows up, causing Nicole to quickly shut her laptop. Fearing that EJ might kidnap her children, Sami went to confront him, but finding him passed out drunk and holding a gun she just shot him in the head!

Nicole found it and she and EJ got married so they could take custody of the kids away from Sami. Nicole found them together and took her revenge by helping expose that EJ and the DiMeras were behind replacing Rafe with an evil look-alike. EJ decided to change his ways again, giving Sami back custody of the twins and running for Mayor of Salem with Nicole managing his campaign. But he used underhanded methods to try and win, framing John for corporate embezzlement.

When Sami and EJ feared Johnny had died, they grieved by falling into bed together, but thankfully the boy was fine. Nicole wound up pregnant, and had to claim that Rafe was the father, something EJ did not believe. When Stefano was shot, EJ was the prime suspect, but was actually innocent. However One day, a picture of them kissing at the Horton cabin arrives at the DiMera mansion. EJ hides it from Sami and immediately tries to locate the photographer.

This cause EJ to go after Nick, first confronted Percy, threatens him into giving him the pictures to destroys and sends him back to England. EJ warn Nick if he try to ruin his family and tell Sami about the affair, Nick would be sorry.

When Nick was shot, this put EJ and Sami on the list of suspects. It was later revealed that their hit man wasn't the one who killed him. While planning her wedding, Sami comes across the photo of Abigail and EJ. She becomes furious but pushes forward with the wedding, after the ceremony, Rafe Hernandez shows up and arrests EJ for tax evasion.

While in jail, EJ signs his proxies to Sami, so she can go to a board meeting in place of him. Sami presents this information to a furious EJ and reveals to him that she was the one who gave the police the evidence for his tax evasion arrest. When EJ asked why she is doing this, she revealed that she knows about his hook up with Abigail and is going to make him pay. EJ try to get through to Sami and beg for her forgiveness, over and over again.

To get back the money Sami and Kate stole from Stefano, EJ also negotiates with Victor and take his drug business but he is faced with a competitor in newly arrived Clyde Weston , who seems friendly and offers a partnership but really wants to takeover EJ's territory.

An effort to win Sami back, EJ would help Sami what saw two becoming closer again. However Stefano return to Salem shake things up for Sami and Kate. Stefano angrily disowns EJ saying he's dead to him. Johnny tells EJ the kids at school are teasing him because he's a DiMera, EJ tells Johnny that as he gets older he'll hear many things about the DiMera family but its a name to be proud of.

EJ has a confrontation with Clyde over Salem's drug territory and is betrayed, shot, and killed by his disloyal bodyguard, Miguel. Stefano has EJ's sister Kristen inject an unknown substance into EJ's body in the morgue for an unknown reason saying only that "time is of the essence".

In there were signs that EJ is still alive; Sami got letter from EJ saying, that if he were dead then Stefano was the cause. The letter was over a year old and contained nothing about Clyde Weston. Sami states EJ wrote things only she and EJ knew, and the letter instructed Sami to get the codes which drained all of Stefano's money from his secret accounts.

Sami agrees to transfer funds he needs to sustain losses suffered by DiMera Enterprises in return for the information about EJ's whereabouts. Stefan reveals to Sami that under Stefano's instructions, Kristen injected EJ with a drug that kept him alive, sneaking him out of the hospital and that Stefano had Sami believe EJ was dead and that EJ's body was never cremated.

Stefan tells Sami that EJ is recovering at a private facility. When Brady Black sneaks into the facility, he finds Xander Kiriakis working with Kristen on a secret project that is revealed to be EJ's recovery. There, it is revealed that EJ's recovery is not as easy as intended, with him losing his ability to speak. In March, Sami revealed to Lucas that things have become very tense with EJ, and how he had become more withdrawn.

Lucas and Sami slept together, and Kristen found out. She blackmailed Sami and Lucas into helping her or else she would tell EJ. However, EJ later managed to take the money back. He shows up at John and Marlena's place where Sami and Lucas are. EJ indicates that some swine is trying to come between him and Sami, and Lucas thinks he is talking about him until EJ says he was referring to the deceased Charlie Dale since she came to confront him and then confessed to his murder to protect Allie.

EJ asks how Allie is, and is glad that Lucas was there for her and Sami, but Lucas asks why EJ wasn't there for Sami especially when she was arrested for Charlie's murder. EJ is about to get confrontational when Sami asks Lucas to leave, and he does. EJ tells Sami he is sorry for being so cold towards her, and explains he knew that Kristen had ordered Xander to kill them, and took the money back because he knew Sami could handle him.

Sami expressed worry about Xander, but EJ tells her to leave Xander to him. EJ asks Sami to pack up while he goes and visits his family. At the mansion, EJ pours himself a drink and nostalgically walks around the main room before sitting down, and glancing at Stefano's portrait.

Raising a glass to his father, EJ greets him, and says it's been a long time, but as he always said "it's good to be back". Tony comes into the room and is shocked to see EJ. Tony asks if EJ doesn't want to stick around and see how the family business is being run. Tony looks back at Stefano's portrait and asks what he was thinking.

As the brothers stare at their father's portrait, EJ wonders why Tony doesn't take over as the oldest. Tony says he is happy with his life and would prefer not to handle the way to day going ons.
