His loss and subsequent relocation are only made more difficult when he discovers public dancing is prohibited by order of the local town council. Drinking and distracted driving contributed to the head-on collision but because the students were returning from an out of town dance, the event was blamed and banned. Pitting two sides against one another, Footloose is a classic tale of teen rebellion with the adults, religion and small town policies clearly in the wrong.

Ren, the outsider, is accused of bringing trouble to the community after a student tries to peg him as a drug dealer. Yet the local adolescents are involved in fistfights, abusive beatings and illegal activities such as faking their way into a big city bar. And these indiscretions are supposed to be viewed as less serious because they are accompanied by a foot stomping musical score.

A man slaps his teen daughter on the face; the teen girl cries and runs away. A man punches a teen boy in the eye, the teen boy drops to the ground, and a teen girl breaks a bottle over the man's head; we later hear a group of teens laughing as they talk about the fight and see a small amount of dried blood under the teen boy's nose.

Two teen boys jump onto a bus driven by a third teen boy, they point out that the back of the bus is on fire, and they jump off the slow-moving bus moments before it crashes and they are all unharmed. A teen boy crashes down from a chain hanging from a ceiling; he hits the ground and gets up unharmed. A teen girl stands completely still in front of an oncoming fast-moving train, and at the last minute a teen boy grabs her and pushes her on the ground to safety as the train speeds by.
